Meet Shelley: Tapestry at Wesbrook Village’s GM
Shelley Grenier has been the General Manager at Tapestry at Wesbrook Village since September 15 and she’s loving every minute of it.
“The moment I walk in the door and off the elevator, I feel totally energized by this place”, Shelley remarks.
That energy and enthusiasm is making an impact on both residents and staff. We took the opportunity to ask Shelley about her first few months here at Tapestry at Wesbrook Village. We also took the opportunity to ask staff and a couple residents for questions they would like answered by Shelley. Read on to learn more about one of our newest team leaders.
What have been a few highlights since you started here at Tapestry at Wesbrook Village?
The Beagle Cup golf tournament and Halloween were a lot of fun. But the biggest highlight has been getting to know everyone here – the staff and residents.
How did you end up working with seniors? What did you do before?
Actually, I have always been working with seniors! The relationship I had with my grandparents is certainly what inspired me to pursue a career serving seniors. I attended the University of Waterloo and became a recreation therapist after high school. I worked as a recreation therapist and managed home support services for a number of years in Ontario.
I eventually moved to Kamloops to pursue real estate development. There I raised my two daughters who are now 15 and 17 years old. I eventually went back into working with seniors in sales for a seniors residence in Kamloops. In 2012, I joined Retirement Concepts as the Director of Sales and Marketing.
It has been wonderful working as a General Manager for the first time. I have long wanted to come back to the community because I missed the relationships with residents and staff. This has been very fulfilling for me so far with Tapestry!
The next questions I collected from a number of different staff members and a couple of residents. I promised their anonymity! Are you ready?
Absolutely!
Was it difficult getting to know resident likes and dislikes?
When you give your full attention to residents, it is not difficult to learn their likes and dislikes over time.
Do you enjoy seeing the same residents every day?
Yes! The relationships with residents is what pulled me back into the community from the office. I feel very privileged to work every day is their home. I keep myself aware of this privilege.
What leader do you most look up to and why?
Michelle Obama. I respect her as a positive, successful, independent woman that maintains a grassroots approach to programs and problem solving. I believe that she truly cares about the power of relationship building and earning respect. I respect her as a person but will refrain from commenting on her politics. lol
What are you reading right now?
I’m not reading a book right now. But I am a news junkie.
What is your favorite movie?
I love Steel Magnolias with Julia Roberts. Watching it makes me cry no matter what is going on! I think the reason it comes to mind as my favorite is because I always watch it with my best friend. We drink wine, watch the movie, and cry together, hahahaha.
What do you do to relax?
What’s that!! I like to keep busy but enjoy the end of the day with a glass of wine in front of the fireplace.
What are your key responsibilities as GM? What is the “pecking order”? What makes this place tick day to day?
I am here to support those that really do the work so that they can soar! Theoretically I am at the top of the pyramid but I honestly see us as a team. However if there are issues, I take full responsibility! 🙂
How is your team organized?
We communicate well and often and everyone is passionate about what we do. We have some small tweaks in the works but generally well oiled.
If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
Always want to live near water as I find water peaceful whether in my tub, my hot tub or on the beach and have yet to find the perfect location but open to trying them all! 😉
Do you play sports? Which ones?
I like to hike, ski, recently got back into golf and tennis and would love to get back to mountain biking
What kind of vitamins are you taking?
One A Day for Women
What’s your favorite food? Favorite wine?
Cab Sauv, I love a great steak or any seafood
How do you stay so fit?
I am not! 🙂
You are stuck on a desert island. You could only have 5 records to listen to for the rest of your life. What are they?
Classical, Sarah MacLauchlan, Rolling Stones, Meatloaf…no country!
