Community Living Helps Village Gate Resident Thrive
When searching for a seniors’ community focused on independent living, Sharon was interested in finding a social environment and knew it was important to join a group of residents pursuing a connected, active and healthy lifestyle. After considering several options, Sharon found just the right fit at Tapestry at Village Gate West, an exceptional community located in the heart of Islington Village.
“What originally interested me in Tapestry at Village Gate West was the many opportunities to try something different and meet new people,” says Sharon. “Even on my first tour, I was pleased to meet some of the residents and hear about the activities. I was so engaged in the experience, I decided to return to enjoy the ‘Disco Night’!”
After moving into Tapestry at Village Gate West in December 2021, Sharon has found many occasions to be actively engaged in community life. As Spring approached, Sharon, who is a passionate gardener, joined the community’s active Gardening Club.
“Gardening is something I have always been passionate about,” says Sharon “It’s amazing to have a group of friends who share similar interests.”
Sharon takes great pride in nurturing the expansive gardens on the community’s property with immense care. Eager to grow and enhance the community garden, Sharon even brought some of her own plants from home when she moved. Sharon encourages the participation of those around her recognizing the many varied benefits of gardening – from forming friendships to exercising mind, body and spirit!
As part of her gardening project for 2022, Sharon and her fellow resident gardeners have grown vegetables and herbs. They proudly share the harvest with other residents who enjoy the opportunity to eat what they grow!
Sharon’s focus on building community and connecting with others found a philanthropic outlet when she was involved in the community’s Ukrainian fundraising events. Working as part of a committed team, she facilitated a silent auction, inspiring residents and employees to support the effort to raise money for the Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal. Tapestry was thrilled that Sharon’s efforts, combined with many other community initiatives, raised more than $8,500!
Moving into a seniors’ community can sometimes feel overwhelming for those who have left a home of many years, lost a spouse or are simply looking to be more socially engaged. Sharon creates a warm and welcoming environment that makes everyone feel welcome and at home.
Sharon makes time to meet every new resident, creating deeper connections by learning more about their history, families, hobbies and interests. She continually encourages residents to try new things and get involved in activities they thought may not be possible which reaffirms our belief that age is only a number and experiences should not be limited by the number of years one has lived.
