Isolated? Lonely? Make Connections at Tapestry
Much research has been done on the negative physical and mental impacts of social isolation. Most recently, the U.S. Surgeon General released a report highlighting loneliness as a serious epidemic affecting all ages.
In his report, he confirmed that loneliness is as toxic to health as smoking and can increase the risk for heart disease, stroke and dementia among older adults. In the same report, the U.S. Surgeon General indicated that cultivating community networks and supporting social interactions are among the best ways to combat loneliness.
Tapestry seniors’ communities recognize the importance of socialization to individual health and wellness. By living at Tapestry, residents enjoy endless opportunities to connect and socialize with others.
When Sharon decided to move into a seniors’ community, she was interested in finding a social environment and knew it was important to join a group of residents pursuing an active and healthy lifestyle. After considering several options, she found the perfect fit at Tapestry.
“What originally interested me in Tapestry was the many opportunities to try something different and meet new people,” says Sharon, who moved into Tapestry in 2022.
Tapestry offers unlimited opportunities for connection and engagement
With an emphasis on the 7 Dimensions of Wellness as defined by the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA), Tapestry is a literal haven for seniors exploring community living or seeking to make a lifestyle change. One of the key differences offered by Tapestry is its focus on collaborating with residents to create engaging programs that align with their interests.
“We pride ourselves on our Tapestry culture, which is about working with residents to collect their feedback to adapt programs that foster participation,” says Adena Waffle, Senior Vice President, Tapestry. “It’s not about us – the employees doing things for residents; it’s about us doing things with them. This ensures that our wellness and community-focused programs remain innovative and enjoyable, and not at all cookie cutter!”
Everyone gets older – but you don’t have to get old!
Don says that moving into Tapestry in 2021 was the best decision he ever made. He believes the vibrancy of the community and its focus on active aging is so important to remaining healthy and happy. “You have to keep moving,” says Don. “Everyone gets older but you don’t have to get old!”
While being social has proven to be key to staying healthy, another recent study of older adults in China found that more frequent social activity was associated with a greater likelihood of living longer. This research, as reported by the ICAA, offers another great reason to consider living in one of Tapestry’s vibrant and connected Vancouver communities.
