Over $5000 Raised for Kids in Need to Play a Season of Sport!
190,000+ active minutes logged. 100+ participants. 28 days. 2 cities. 3 Tapestry Retirement Communities in a Fitness Frenzy.
Tapestry Retirement Communities participated in Fitness Frenzy throughout the month of February. Fitness Frenzy was intended to promote healthy living for staff and residents while also raising funds for a non-profit organization supporting children and families in need. This year, Tapestry Retirement Communities, two in Vancouver and one in Toronto, decided to support KidSport and raised over $5000 in donations.
KidSport is a national not-for-profit organization that provides financial assistance for registration fees and equipment to kids aged 18 and under. Through a confidential application process, KidSport provide grants so they can play a season of sport. Nationally, KidSport is comprised of a network of 11 provincial/territorial KidSport chapters and 178 community KidSport chapters. Since its creation in 1993, over 450,000 kids across the country have been given the chance to play sport through KidSport grants and sport introduction programming.
Residents and staff at each community who participated made commitments to fitness goals and secured sponsors. Many residents who could not participate in the physical activity chose to participate by making a donation. We are so proud of resident and staff participation at each of our communities!
You can check out the amazing participation and fun at the Tapestry Retirement Communities Instagram page at www.instagram.com/tapestry.retirement. Brian and Nancy at Tapestry at Village Gate West in Toronto commented that the community really came together and pooled together to support the cause. And congratulations to Tapestry at Village Gate West in Toronto who won the 2015 Instagram Crown for the most posts on the Tapestry Instagram page featuring #FitFeb posts!
Tapestry residents and staff are looking forward to presenting each of their donation cheques totaling over $5000 to KidSport in BC and ON in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for more on this. Check out the stats and highlights from each Tapestry community…
Tapestry at Arbutus Walk (Vancouver)
Recreation team leaders, Sabeena and Kara, created a competition between two teams – yellow and red – to ignite and motivate resident and staff participation! At the Fitness Frenzy launch party at the beginning of the month, residents and staff were split into two randomly selected teams and given yellow and red bracelets. This helped identify team mates and encourage friendly competition to boost active minutes. Nothing like some peer pressure to keep you honest and committed to healthy lifestyle goals! The Arbutus Walk’s PrimeFit instructor Sanaah logged and encouraged participants throughout. Teams got competitive quickly and teams grew after word spread. FitBits were presented to the resident and staff member with the most active minutes – congrats Maisie (resident with 1800 active minutes) and Lee (staff with approx. 8500 active minutes)!

PrimeFit instructor Olga had packed classes regularly and additional Fitness Frenzy activities gained extra participation outside of the walking participants.
