Planning Makes Perfect When Moving To Tapestry
Most of us find it easier to put things off, and many of us hesitate when it comes to change – especially something as big as moving to a new home. Planning ahead, especially when it comes to making the move to retirement living, can help make the transition easier.
Robert, who moved into Tapestry at Wesbrook Village in September 2022, is the perfect example of ‘planning makes perfect’. He made the decision to move into Tapestry well ahead of his retirement date. In fact, he’s still working!
A professor of finance for 42 years at the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Sauder School of Business, Robert had been thinking about the timing for his retirement, including where he should move to from his two-bedroom home of 30 years in the Dunbar area of Vancouver. A colleague suggested he consider Tapestry. Located on the UBC Endowment Lands, Wesbrook Village is only a 30-minute walk from Robert’s office.
“I’m transitioning from full-time work to retirement over the next year or two,” says Robert. “I wanted to make my life as simple as possible. And I didn’t want the hassle of owning a home.”
Robert is looking forward to taking full advantage of everything Tapestry has to offer when he starts to reduce his teaching load, although he has already managed to fit in some fitness classes and other activities at the community.
“The key is that I always want to be engaged,” says Robert. “As I do less of that at work, I want to have someplace that I can use my time that I find enjoyable. There are so many things going on all day every day at Tapestry that I don’t have time for now,” he says. “This was part of my plan – to have something waiting for me when I leave UBC.”
While Robert lives a very independent life – food prepping and eating the majority of his meals in his suite for example – he does appreciate that Tapestry offers a full service Restaurant. He also appreciates that Tapestry’s caring employees are always looking out for him. “I had been living on my own for so long… recently I was feeling unwell,” he says. “I mentioned it to one of the employees, and I started getting phone calls from the Wellness team, checking in to make sure I was okay.”
Robert is also grateful for the unique services provided by Tapestry’s Sales & Move-In Advisor Keeley Jones, who serves both Wesbrook Village and Tapestry at Arbutus Walk. Keeley helped simplify Robert’s move as she served as the main point of contact for everything to do with his transition to Tapestry, including designing a floor plan, recommending reputable movers, and even helping him select and purchase new furniture for his suite.
“I’m very happy that I made the move. The sense of community here was one of the big attractions for me,” says Robert. “There are so many amazing life stories among the people I am meeting here, and the employees are just fantastic.”
Tiffany Whelan, Director, Sales at Tapestry, recommends thinking about and planning early for your move to retirement living. “One of the most common things we hear from our residents is that they wished they had made the move sooner given the many benefits and advantages of community living,” Tiffany says.
