Tapestry Victoria Harbour Presents Master Chef
Residents from our Tapestry community in Victoria held a Master Chef-themed challenge featuring six different teams cooking up a flavourful storm… with a healthy dash of competition enjoyed by all!
The spectacular culinary competition comprised of employee and resident teams was fierce. Each inspired team was challenged to get creative with their black box of ingredients while incorporating a “surprise” item assigned after spinning a wheel—and prior to starting the challenge.
After selecting additional pantry items to add flavour and zing to their culinary concoctions, teams were given a minute to discuss their dish before the timer began. Only one person per team was allowed to cook at any one time until it was time to switch places with teammates sequestered in a separate waiting area. Participants were allotted just 45 seconds to communicate with fellow team members before the next aspiring chef took the culinary lead.
Once each chef had taken their turn, and the dish was deemed complete, it was presented to the judges, Executive Chef James West and Barbara Hicks, Sales Advisor.
Executive Chef James says he was inspired by how well the teams handled working under pressure when faced with the challenge of limited ingredients and minimal team communication.
“Everyone came together to create a plan, communicated effectively and collaborated brilliantly,” he says, noting that a dash of lateral thinking was required to integrate the mystery ingredient that helped to create a unique take on a simple dish.
Resident chefs enjoyed the opportunity to forge new recipes and friendships. “We had just a fabulous time,” says Ruth. “It was fun to see the teams interact and have onlookers cheer us on.” Ruth, who enjoys watching reality cooking competitions, felt honoured to participate. “I felt like Gail Simmons or Padma Lakshmi and the quality of the food was better than I expected!”
Asked why he chose to participate in the friendly competition, resident Carl admitted he was a reluctant chef who “caved under friendly persuasion”! Carl says he relished the opportunity to ‘get outside his comfort zone’ and build stronger connections with fellow resident foodies.
The Master Chef competition at Tapestry at Victoria Harbour is a wonderful example of the unique and creative events that build connection and friendship in our communities. If you want to live in a vibrant and dynamic environment that fosters connection and friendship, now is the time to consider exploring one of Tapestry’s active aging seniors’ communities.
We welcome you to enjoy a personal tour and complimentary lunch – no cooking or competition required!
