Victoria Harbour Residents Soar to New Heights
Residents at Tapestry at Victoria Harbour made national news this week when they jumped out of a plane to participate in a tandem sky dive as part of the community’s unique approach to wellness programming. The residents were joined by a small but mighty group of Tapestry employees at the Drop Zone in Campbell River, B.C.
Resident Angie was undaunted by the prospect of sky diving and was looking forward with anticipation to cross the experience off her “bucket list.” Although she admitted the jump was frightening and was initially quite scared, after an hour with her feet solidly on the ground, she expressed feeling great and did not hesitate to wave her hands which featured a message to her children and grand-children, “Hi Kids!”
Bobbie, another resident at Victoria Harbour, thoroughly enjoyed soaring through the air and even helped to steer the parachute to improve her vantage point. “I’m so happy I did this,” says Bobbie, who did her first tandem jump nearly 20 years ago. “I had a 360-degree view and I loved it.”
Tapestry neighbour Phyll also enjoyed soaring to new heights although she kept her plans to herself, not even sharing with others, lest they try to dissuade her from participating in this incredible experience.
Tapestry employees were absolutely thrilled to join in the high-flying adventure. “Everyone would do this again,” says Kimberly MacNeill, Wellness Manager. “The engagement from everyone was just amazing. This was a day that we are going to repeat every year for sure.”
Tapestry’s skydiving adventure is a perfect reflection of the community’s commitment to wellness and a clear example of why Victoria Harbour was named “Best in Wellness” among senior living communities in North America as the proud first place recipient of the 2021 Pinnacle Award.
It is also an excellent example of how all Tapestry communities aim to push the boundaries on active aging and combat ageistic perceptions that attempt to limit experiences and opportunities simply based on the number of birthdays one has celebrated.
In Vancouver, residents often snow-shoe, kayak and hike, challenging themselves to new terrain. In Toronto, a keen group of resident adventure seekers recently zip-lined in Niagara Falls, enjoying a magical experience that brought them within spray distance of the majestic cataracts.
