Catch Her If You Can: On the Move with Resident Joan Osmond
Planes, trains and automobiles…subways, buses, and boats. These are the modes of transportation that resident Joan Osmond has been utilizing the past 15 months since she moved into Tapestry at Village Gate West. Joan is one of our many community active agers who loves to travel. She has gotten on planes to fly to Texas, Arizona, North Carolina and most recently Edinburgh at Christmas. This fall she flew to Vancouver and then got on the Rocky Mountaineer train and explored the Rockies.
In the summer she went in a car to a cottage at Manitoulin Island. Joan takes advantage of the subway being so close to the community and to explore familiar and unfamiliar locations in Toronto. Joan also joins other Village Gate West residents on our bus outings. Where to next Joan? “A Baltic Cruise in May”.
Joan jokes that she has been traveling her entire 86 years. “I was conceived in Canada. Born in England and lived there for 14 years and then my family moved to Australia”. From Australia, Joan came to Canada for two years then back to Australia and then back to Canada and settled in Toronto.
While working she spent most of her vacation days travelling and when she retired, she and a friend bought a motor home and for six years they traveled all over North America. Joan’s other travels include cruises in the Caribbean, Panama, and down the St. Lawrence, as well as trips to Costa Rica and Trinidad and Tobago. When Joan is not traveling, she is engaged throughout the day in group and independent activities. “I want and need to do things to stay engaged daily. There are so many things going on here.” “I feel like I have a great life and as long as I feel I can do it I am going to go for it. I am so grateful for being here at Tapestry.”
