Tapestry: Sharing old memories and making new ones  

On December 22, Carlos and Isabel Bermonte celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary surrounded by family – and about 100 new friends – at Tapestry at Village Gate West. 

Carlos and Isabel moved into Tapestry in March 2019. After viewing several retirement communities in Toronto, they landed on Tapestry as an ideal choice for so many reasons: Location, dining options, wellness programs, lovely suites and most of all, the joyful and welcoming feeling that was apparent upon entering the comfortably-designed community. 

“There was something different about Tapestry that appealed to both of us,” says Isabel, who since arriving has made many dear friends and taken up new hobbies, including jewelry making. Carlos has also found new passions like aqua-fit in the warm salt-water pool. While not quite the beloved Atlantic Ocean he swam in as a boy while living on the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores, he enjoys the challenging workouts that are helping to keep him active and fit. 

When Carlos and Isabel’s two daughters started to consider special ways to mark their parents’ 60-year wedding anniversary, they didn’t look any further than their parents’ new home at Tapestry at Village Gate West. With lovely amenity spaces, they worked with the restaurant team to create a special event in the community’s beautifully-appointed second floor lounge – the perfect place for a celebration of love and life.

A Taste of Portugal

Tapestry’s Executive Chef, Carl MacNeil, welcomed the opportunity to create an appetizer menu that would feature a little taste of Portugal, the country that Carlos and Isabel left behind more than 50 years ago when they immigrated to Canada from the Azores in search of a new life and a brighter future for themselves and their three young children. 

“When I asked Carl to create appetizers with a unique Portuguese flair, I honestly thought he would say I’m asking for the impossible,” says Eduarda Bermonte Hodgins, Carlos and Isabel’s youngest daughter. “I couldn’t believe when Carl and his team said they were absolutely open to these possibilities and infusing the event with options that would be extra meaningful to mom and dad.”
